Getting Started with Your First Website
A website has several components that come together to form a system.
Every website has an address on the internet also known as a URL. In turn each page of the overall website has a unique URL. The URL in the form of a name also has a numeric URL.
A website generally has a starting page known as a home page. This is the starting point where multiple branches may originate from. By convention, The home page is normally named index.html or welcome.html
The name that makes up the URL is almost always a domain name. A domain name is some unique name that rights are obtained for by payment to a domain registrar. The use of the domain name is purchased in increments of time and may be lost if payment is discontinued.
The next component of the system is the webserver or webhost. These are 2 distinct tools which may make up part of the system. A webserver is a computer that stores the webpage. A webhost is an entity that maintains a webserver and leases space out to tenants. While some large companies may maintain their own webserver, generally this job is acomplished my leasing space on a webserver.
These 3 parts have now formed a foundation. The website is a file or
group of files on a webserver and is located on the internet by a URL
which contains the domain name. The page you are reading is a file which
branches from the domain
